Artist Statement

My practice sits in-between painting, collage, assemblage and photography. Through the medium of painted wooden constructions and found material, I engage with the physical, material and psychological languages of spaces and places. I make contradictory spaces - invited to enter, simultaneously denied, a reassertion of the picture plane or surface. I create a receptiveness to space, architecture, and the somatic experiences inherent in existing, inhabiting and dwelling in place. Interstitial spaces and attention seeking colours intensify awareness, whilst gestures paused, quiet corners and lack of readability concentrate the gaze. The act of seeing is a construction in itself – moments of fluidity, continuity, disruptions and pauses. Through rhythmic repetitions of colour, relief, activated/inactivated surfaces and partial views, I encourage an encounter that brings experiences closer to the reality of perception.

I am excited by the different modes, languages and systems of image making and image representation. My interest in expanded painting stems from a curiosity of the intersection of pictorial and sculptural experience. How is an image made, what remains of the image, when does the reading of an object go beyond image and move into experiential territory, are recurring questions within my practice. I am interested in the studio environment acting as a certain osmosis or accumulative build-up of material facts. The architecture and poetry of space serves to inform the conditions of my work and its direction. Through my work, I aim to consider the architecture of a space as an inbuilt topography or language to which I respond.
